There is a moment in every leader’s life when the distance between who you are at work and who you are at home becomes impossible to ignore. You can pretend it is fine for a while. For me, it came through a two-year-old boy with a quiet voice and the softest eyes I have ever seen. His name is Joseph. You have heard me mention him before, but I wanted to share a little more.
Before Joseph, leadership was something I talked about the way most people do. Big ideas. Big goals. Big pressure. Big noise. I had mastered the noise. Noise made me money. Noise made me feel necessary. Noise made me feel like I was winning.
But noise cannot reach a child. It cannot reach anyone you love. It corrodes the very relationships you think you are building for. It steals you in small pieces until the people who matter most only get what is left.
The day I realized that, something inside me broke in a way that felt honest. The kind of break you cannot tape back together with motivation or discipline. The kind of break that forces you to choose a different way or lose something sacred. That is the day the whole idea of leadership shifted for me. It stopped being about performance. It stopped being about being impressive. It stopped being about how many people were watching.
It became about responsibility. Real responsibility. Not deadlines. Not metrics. Not strategy decks. Responsibility for the emotional oxygen in the room. Responsibility for the rhythm people live inside. Responsibility for every life that bends around your choices.
That shift is what became Empowerment Design.
Because I saw the truth: Leadership collapses when it is built on personality. Leadership expands when it is built on design. And real design does not start with the business. It starts with the human being at the center of it. It starts with the weight you carry when nobody is asking you to be impressive. It starts with the version of you your family knows before the world gets ahold of you.
No book prepared me for that realization. No strategic plan. No coach. No mastermind. It happened when I was trying to connect with Joseph and realized I was speaking a language he could not hear. Not because he lacked ability. Because I lacked intention.
Every leader has a Joseph. It might be a child. It might be a partner. It might be an employee who is quietly drowning in a culture that was built without them in mind. It might be your own sense of self that has been pushed aside under the weight of “what leaders are supposed to be.”
